Frequently asked questions
Answers to common queries about solar energy and our services
Questions about solar?
How much do solar panels cost?
The cost varies depending on the system size, brand, and installation complexity. On average:
A 3-4 kW system costs between £5,000 – £7,000.
A 5-6 kW system costs between £7,000 – £9,000.
Battery storage adds £2,000 – £4,000 but maximises savings.
Do I need planning permission for solar panels?
Most residential solar panel installations do not require planning permission as they fall under Permitted Development Rights. However, listed buildings or properties in conservation areas may need approval, as would ground mounted panels.
How long do solar panels last?
Solar panels typically last 25-30 years with minimal degradation, however they will still work after this but at a lower output. Most manufacturers provide warranties for 25-30 years.
Do solar panels work on cloudy days or at night?
Solar panels still generate electricity on cloudy days, but at a reduced efficiency (typically 10-25% of peak output). At night, solar panels do not generate power, but battery storage systems can store excess energy for later use.
What is the payback period for solar panels?
Most solar panel systems in the UK pay for themselves within 6-10 years through energy savings and Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) payments.
What is the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)?
The SEG scheme allows homeowners to sell excess solar energy back to the grid, earning money on unused electricity. Rates vary by energy provider. Most providers require you to have MCS certification for your system in order to claim export tariffs.
Do solar panels need maintenance?
Solar panels require minimal maintenance. Occasional cleaning and ensuring they are free from dust, debris, or snow will keep them operating efficiently. Regular inverter checks are also recommended.
How do I know if my roof is suitable for solar panels?
Ideal roofs:
- South-facing for maximum sunlight exposure.
- East or West-facing can still generate significant power.
- Minimal shading from trees or buildings.
- Strong roof structure to support panel weight.
During your free home survey, one of our team members will visit your property to assess your roof’s suitability and advise how many panels can be installed.
What if I move house after installing solar panels?
Solar panels can increase your property’s value, improve its energy rating, and make it more appealing to potential buyers.
Questions about storage?
How does battery storage work?
Simply put, battery storage is a smart way to maximise your return on investment from a solar panel system and ensure you utilise the power generated from your solar panels. A home battery stores any extra solar you generate so that you can use it later, rather than exporting to the grid – even after the sun goes down.
What battery storage options are available?
We can supply and fit a range of home batteries with storage capacity from 3kWh to 13.5kWh. We will access your energy needs and advise on what options are best suited.
I'm considering solar panels, should I get a battery too?
Battery storage systems allow you to store any excess energy you generate from your solar panels to use later in the day when you need it – for example, in the evening when the sun has gone down, maximising savings and reducing reliance on the grid. You can also charge your battery overnight on a cheaper off-peak tariff during the winter months when the sun is not so prevalent.
Can I monitor how much energy my battery is storing?
All of our home battery options come with an app which allows you to monitor the performance of your solar panel and battery storage system, including a live view of how power is moving between your solar panels, your battery, and your home.
Is solar battery storage worth it?
With the addition of a home battery to the system, we would expect solar self-consumption to increase from 50% to up to 90%, saving you as much as 90% on your energy bills.
What’s more, you can even store energy from the grid during the night when energy is cheaper by being less in demand – and, with smart scheduling, monitor, manage and schedule its charge.
Can I add battery storage to existing solar panels?
It isn’t necessary to have your battery installed at the same time as your solar panels but there are benefits.
It’s also worth mentioning that depending on the approval required for your solar system, it may be easier to gain approval for solar and a battery at the same time, rather than having to submit a second application with any wait times later down the line.
How long do batteries last?
Our home batteries come with a 10-12 year warranty to make sure you can get the most out of your battery and home solar system.
How much does battery storage cost?
Our battery storage costs depend on the type of system you are having installed, if you’re having solar installed at the same time, the amount of storage you required and many other factors. This would be discussed with you during our free home survey.
Does battery storage work with off-peak tariffs?
Yes. You can charge your battery overnight during off peak hours and use the power to feed your home during the day and evening when power is more expensive.
